description:Opening Covington Manor was a culmination of our long time dream to run a bed and breakfast in what we believe is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Cambridge is a delightful, quaint and, above all, genuine small midwestern town, situated among the gentle hills and lush forests of southern Wisconsin. For all the idyllic peace of a small town, there is plenty to do. We have swimming and boating at nearby Lake Ripley only 5 blocks away, exciting shopping, excellent biking on local trails and county roads, the Fireside Theater just 15 minutes away, and of course the many events and attractions the University of Wisconsin and the city of Madison have to offer only an easy 20 minutes to the west. You can relax as much as you want, but you will have to work hard to get bored Our house is a local historic landmark - the original owner, over a century ago, was one of the original members of the community. The house is surrounded on three sides by an extensive garden, which we have been tirelessly restoring to its full glory, and several large trees which provide welcome shade throughout the summer. The front is adorned with a grand, welcoming porch, the kind where you can while away a leisurely morning, escape from the sun for a lengthy midday siesta, or enjoy the cooling evening breeze. Inside you will find all the peace, quiet, and luxury you have ever wanted in a bed and breakfast. A warm and dignified foyer stands in the middle of the house, and off to the side are a plush and comfortable parlor, and an elegant dining room where very special gourmet breakfasts are served. The guest parlor is a perfect place for a chat with friends, a game of chess, or just some quiet time with a book. All our guest rooms are located upstairs, and afford pleasant views onto the beautiful gardens and historic neighborhood.;

description:Doc Bilstad came to Cambridge in the years after World War One, buying this corner home close to the school he so could watch from his back door as his three girls walked into schoolhouse each day. Then he would stride back through the house, unlock the front door that now welcomes Cambridge House guests, and declare his doctoring practice as open for the day. Doc lived upstairs, in the part of the home that now is where folks relax in the North, South and East rooms. Downstairs people waited in the front room for their turn to see the kindly and wise doctor in his adjoining large office. The wisdom he shared has become part of Cambridge's tradition, where people continue to live in the comfort only possible in a small home town. Guests of Cambridge House now come to 123 East Main Street for the relaxation that is so important to a healthy lifestyle and sit in what was Doc's office to discuss wonderful ideas while enjoying gourmet breakfasts prepared by Jeff. (Linda helps) Locals have to have been born in the early 1940's or before to remember coming with their parents to see Doc Bilstad. In addition to serving the people of Cambridge and area, Doc researched and wrote papers for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. When invited to the campus, he explained he preferred to be the local doctor in the village of Cambridge. Doctor Bilstad's three daughters all went on to singular professional careers, but none took up the mantle of Doc's md. Esther went on to be a distinguished pilot, Gwendolyn earned a Masters in Social Work (msw) and worked in Chicago, and Nellie became the family's Professor. Cambridge is a place where we watch little league, picnic in the park and wave to neighbors passing by. It's a place where visitors are warmly welcomed with great restaurants, galleries and charming little shops. It's a place where we know you would feel right at home. Come visit...we'll even save you a bench in the shade. Cambridge House was once the name of a local hotel on the square, but...;
