The Cottage is on the main bus route so ideal for independant older travelers. There are marked walk routes that will bring you through the Hills and Valleys at Barn Owl Cottage and the main walking trail passes by our door or a longer walk is the Blue Stack Hills Trail. 18 Hole Golf courses at Nairn and Portnoo. Fishing on the Owenea river a few minutes walk from Barn Owl Cottage, stocked with salmon and trout. Other attractions in the area are Glenveagh National Park and Castle . This beautiful park is home to heards of red deer and golden eagles about one hours drive from our Vacation Cottage. There is a Visitors Centre and the Castle is surrounded by one of the finest gardens in Ireland. There are guided tours of the Castle and a restaurant with tea/coffee and home made scones available. St Connells Meseum and Heritage Centre in Glenties is a popular tourist attraction. The beautiful beaches at Nairn and Portnoo which are blue flag awarded are just 10 minute drive from Barn Owl Cottage. Glenties town offers a choice of Restaurants and Traditional Irish pubs with Traditional Music. description:Greencastle is the nearest town: It is a commercial fishing port, and has the National Fisheries College and a picturesque harbour area.The town almost certainly got its name from the old castle, which in turn may have got its name from the 'green' freestone with which it was built.The castle, which is now a ruin, was known as the De Burgo Castle, and was built in 1305 as a base to provide a stronghold for Norman power in the North West. It was named Northburg and was built on the site of a much older fortress. There is a more modern Martello Fort beside the ruin, built by the British during the Napoleonic Wars to stop a possible French Fleet from invading.With the decline of the fishing industry, Greencastle has become more of a holiday village. There has been much building of new homes in recent years. A Maritime Museum and a Planetarium in the town are worth visiting. There is also a small golf course near the shore, and another one at Redcastle, further south towards Derry.A few km down the road is the larger town of Moville, where one can enjoy a variety of restaurants and pubs.Hill walking has become an increasingly popular activity, and there are some spectacular walks in the area. A rewarding coastal walk would be along the cliffs from Inishowen Head to Kinnegoe Bay, with its beautiful beaches and the site of the wreck of the Spanish Armada vessel, the La Trinidad Valecera, which went down in 1588.
