Kay Creek Cottage was home to a local artist for many years and has been completely refurbished in a way that retains its original character and ambiance yet offers all modern conveniences. Snuggle up by the wood stove or relax on the balcony and watch life unfurl on the river below. Either way you can be sure your batteries will be recharged for the next leg of your journey. Wild life abounds hawks and eagles can be seen flying overhead whilst the little blue wren and his mate forage for food down below. As night falls the tiny Bennetts wallaby makes an appearance just outside your window. A 1/2 hour stroll through the oldgrowth forest to marvel at the lush tree ferns, 60m high eucalypts, fragrant rainforest trees and the tiny creatures scurrying on the moss covered forest floor. Lunch at nearby Home Hill Winery or another nearby attraction. Enjoy wine and cheese at the lookout as the sun sinks behind the hills. Possums, wallabies, bats and owls can be found most evenings. Self cater or enjoy a gourmet dinner served direct to your cabin or the outdoor entertainment area. A glass of fine local wine enjoyed under the stars soaking in the outdoor bath to end the perfect day at Huon Bush Retreats. Each cabin is private in it's own special setting. Choose from the absolute privacy of secluded Streamside Cabin, the spectacular forest gully outlook of Big Tree Cabin or the easy access and mountain view at Acacia Grove Cabin. Twelve volt solar electricity, supplies lights and music, whilst the wood fire keeps the cabin cosy, even under winter snows. Each cabin has a composting toilet an indoor shower and also features an outdoor bath. Kitchens are well equipped with gas range, utensils and crockery etc. Furnishings are modern and very comfortable A queen sized bed, a double sofa bed plus a single trundle bed. Also a kitchen table, second sofa plus an outdoor setting. Tipees are not quite camping, not quite luxury cabin. Fully carpeted with double sofa bed, solar electric lights and music. The wood fired heater keeps them cozy year round. The shared facilities are just a minutes walk away. Self cater in well equipped kitchens or have meals to order delivered to your cabin or campsite. We can cater for outdoor functions for up to 60 people under cover. By day, abundant birds and small creatures inhabit the forest and open areas. By night nocturnal mammals go about their lives throughout the site. Please drive slowly at night as wallabies frequently jump in front of moving cars. On site activities include A 2 minute wheelchair accessible lookout to a rainforest gully and hidden waterfall. Take the half hour loop track and experience 60 metre tall 300 year old trees in our oldgrowth forest. More challenging options also exist for the fit and experienced outdoors enthusiast. Nearby are outdoor based activities and destinations such as Hartz Mountains and Southwest National Parks, Tahune Air Walk, Trout Fishing, Horse Riding, Bruny Island and a wide range of bushwalks. It's one and a half hours drive south to Cockle Creek the southern most road in Australia and a further 5 hour return walk to South Cape Bay. The Huon is home to some fine vineyards, restaurants and cafes, galleries and craftspeople and attractions such as the apple museum. Please Note Huon Bush Retreats lives up to its name we are a place ideally suited to people who want peace, privacy and/or want to connect with nature. We at the end of a 4km winding, narrow, gravel road. We recommend that you arrive in daylight unless you are used to navigating in remote areas. We are not connected to the 240 volt electricity grid (small appliances such as computers can be charged from the 240 volt system at reception). There is no television.
